The Future of DJ Equipment

Technology moves fast - fact. Buying our music is done like never before where we can have any tune we want at the touch of a button on iTunes! This means that the way DJs play their music is changing.

Digital DJ Equipment

The age of the digital DJ is upon us. More and more DJs are using digital DJ equipment. Some DJs are using their laptop with software, some are using hardware based digital DJ equipment, and others are using a combination of both.

DJ Software

DJ SoftwareThe use of DJ software has been steadily increasing over the last 10 years. Starting with DJ software packages such as PCDJ the DJ software market now offers an array of DJ software like never before! The software only packages are all reasonably easy to install and use on your home laptop. DJing has never been so easy to get started.

Digital DJ Hardware

Digital DJ HardwareAlmost all major DJ equipment brands have a selection of digital DJ hardware. Digital DJ hardware usually consists of a physical controller and a piece of software that is either supplied with it or is compatible with other independent DJ software, like Ableton. The best thing about using hardware based digital DJ hardware is that you have something tangable to work with giving the DJ a feel of genuinely mixing their music.

USB & Mass Storage DJ Players

Mass Storage DJ PlayerAs most music is available to buy online via either a service like iTunes or a direct mp3 download service, DJs are wanting to play these digital downloads without having to first burn them on to a CD. The mass-storage DJ players solve this problem allowing a DJ to simply plug-in their usb hard-drive or usb-pen drive and start playing music within seconds.

Even Further in the Future

4G Data StreamSo what we've discussed is what is happening now, but what next? There has been speculation that even further in the future, consumers of music including DJs will download music at will. This convenience is likely to be built into DJ software. DJs will no longer horde massive record collections - they will simply pay a subscription service which will allow them to select a track at will, download it and have it ready to play in seconds. This technology is likely to evolve as the new 4G cellular network rolls out across the UK over the next decade.

How exciting is the prospect of music on-demand! I know a DJ who has mobile internet and does download anything he doesn't have when it is requested. But to have it built into the software would be great!
